DNB is not equivalent to MD/MS

notequal

Well this is an unending tussle. One side MCI says that DNB courses from Non teaching hospitals (which is the case in majority of times) will not be considered as equivalent to MD/MS because MCI does not regulate the standards of those hospitals. On the other hands NBE and MOHFW says that govt. considers it as equivalent.

The recently meeting of MCI says,

DNB:
Those who pass DNB from a Non-teaching Hospital (other then Medical Colleges/Teaching Institutions recognized by MCI as Teaching Institutions) would be required to have further three years experience as Junior Resident in a Teaching Hospital, before they could be considered eligible for appointment to the post of Senior Resident. They would also be required to work for another one year as Senior Resident (after DNB) in a Teaching Hospital before they could be considered as eligible for appointment to the post of Assistant Professor. Those who pass DNB from a Teaching Hospital (Medical College/Teaching Institution) would be eligible for appointment to the post of Senior Resident. However, they would be required to work for another one year (after DNB) as Senior Resident/Equivalent post in a Teaching Hospital before they could be considered eligible for appointment to the post of Assistant professor.

Post Graduate Diploma:
Those who pass postgraduate Diploma (2 years’ course) from a recognized Medical Teaching Institution would be required to have further one year experience before they could be considered eligible for appointment to the post of Senior Resident in that Specialty.

However this does not affect the DNB candidates for private jobs and private practice or jobs in non teaching hospitals. Still, a proper clarity in this area from the Govt. is awaited by thousands of doctors.
